Yoryi Morel
Jorge Octavio Morel Tavares 1906–1979 nace en Santiago de los Caballeros. Es otro pintor atado a la figuración tipificadora de las costumbres, el folklore, la naturaleza y la tipología social, preferentemente la de tierra adentro, aunque su hacer pictórico ofrece otras variables temáticas. En 1954, cursando la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, realiza murales en el Jardín de Infancia Leónidas Radhamés y en 1956 participa en la Octava Bienal de Artes Plásticas, presentando un Retrato (óleo) de estilo académico de Marrero Aristy. Inicia su formación pictórica en la ciudad natal, bajo la orientación del pintor Félix Negro Disla, realizando en sus años estudiantiles algunas decoraciones en la Escuela México. Becado por la Secretaría de Estado de Educación, se traslada a Santo Domingo en 1968 para estudiar en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes.
A partir de la década de los 70 es cuando intensifica su labor de artista, efectuando su primera individual en Casa de Teatro (1975), y luego en la Galería Auffant (1977). Simultáneamente su obra está presente en concursos y colectivas de importancia. Su obra variada es la de un pintor de producciones simultáneas, el cual, sometido a un lenguaje figurado, lo mismo realiza una obra costumbrista, realista, de propuesta surreal o fantástica, al igual que un paisaje de corte impresionista o una imagen estampera.

Jorge Octavio Morel Tavares 1906–1979 was a painter from thee Dominican Republic. Along with Jaime Colson and Darío Suro he is considered one of the founders of the modernist school of Dominican painting. A native of Santiago de los Caballeros, he spent most of his career in Santiago Province in the north of the country. Although he studied under Juan Bautista Gomez in his youth, he is generally considered to be self taught. He is the leading Dominican “costumbrista” painter and is known for his landscapes, genre paintings, and portraits. Held his first solo exhibition in Santo Domingo in 1932. He participated in the Dominican Republic's first Biennial Art Exhibition in 1942, and won first prize in the 6th Biennial in 1952. He was declared the "Pintor Nacional" (national painter) by the Dominican Congress on October 25, 2006.
During four years he oriented Hernandez Ortega, Jose Gausachs and Vela Zanetti. It is from the 70s when he intensified his work as an artist, making his first solo at Casa de Teatro (1975) and then at the Gallery Auffant (1977). Hel founded a fine arts school in Santiago, which was attended by Clara Ledesma. Two important retrospectives were held to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth: Por los Caminos de Nuestra Expresión at the Bellapart Museum in Santo Domingo in 2006 and Autonomía y Trascendencia at León Centre in Santiago in 2007.
